Let us talk about Yoga - Part 2

1) Which is better: yoga or gym?
Actually both have their individual importance.
  • Gym is mostly preferred to gain muscle mass & shape. Yoga is preferred for complete well being considering Body, Mind & Soul connection.
  • Gym will give you physical development but yoga will give you all round personality development at physical, mental, intellectual, emotional and spiritual level.
Actually, when we listen the word Yoga, the first image comes in our mind is that Asanas & Meditation thats it & nothing more!
Actual yoga is much more than that.
Yoga means connecting individual self with the universal self.
It means having Dexterity in action.
Yoga is not only Asana & Pranayama . It is Ashtanga Yoga i.e. it includes Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi.
It`s ultimate goal is Self Awareness.
  • Yoga is good for Mind, Body & soul.
  • It gives mental stability, peace & soothing effect.
  • It increases muscle tone.
  • It helps to attain self awareness.
  • It helps in complete personality development at physical, mental, intellectual, emotional and spiritual level.
Actually Dhyana is one of the part of the Ashtanga Yoga.
Ashtanga Yoga includes :- 1)Yama 2)Niyama 3)Aasana 4)Pranayama 5)Pratyahara 6)Dharana 7)Dhyana 8)Samadhi.
Most people consider Yoga as Yogasana & Dhyana i.e. Meditation as different concept. So this question is wrong.
Yoga is not at all a pseudoscience.
It is the matter of experience. Thousands of researches are done till now & still further journey is going on. Yoga is becoming famous in western countries also due to its efficiency. Yoga is being used as a supportive or mainstream therapy also in various diseases.
Why we always underestimate our science and don't accept and respect it until and unless it is accepted by foreign countries ?

Let us talk about Yoga – Part 1

What are the obstacles to practicing yoga at home?

The obstacles which occur while practicing Yoga at home:-
  • Lack of regularity:- There arises problem of “Regularity”. The One who lacks strong determination can not maintain regularity. The one who needs motivation or yogic environment around him can’t work at home.
  • Lack of silence :- “Silence” is not achieved most of the times as other family members are engaged in some other activities.
  • Lack of Space.
  • Lack of Concentration
  • Lack of Advise.
  • Lack of Motivation
  • Lack of Tools.
  • You will feel fatigue, body ache etc. due to regular exertion.
  • You will feel unhappy, irritated, angry, anxious fearful etc. due to frequent wrong thought process.
  • Your self control, confidence, morality will decline in the course of life.
  • So to clean your soul, re-frame your mind and to strengthen your body, you should do Yoga i.e. Ashtang Yoga from Yamas and Niyamas (self discipline and social moralities) as first steps before doing Asanas etc.
  • Actually yoga can be done before going to toilet also, But the condition is that you should not restrict or postponed the natural surges.
  • If you have problem of constipation you can do Pavanmuktasana (before defecation), Ashwini mudra (before and during defecation) and Ganesha mudra (before defecation or at bed time).
  • If you have any urination, menstruation or reproductive organ related issues do Shaktichalini mudra during regular yoga time.
  • Oil application is called as abhyanga.
  • अभ्यंगं आचरेत् नित्यम्।
  • Abhyanga should be done daily and ideally before yoga or exercise.
  • Abhyanga increases muscle tone.
  • So if we do abhyanga before yoga flexibility of muscles increases, so as to achieve and maintain the yogic pose.
  • Most important benefit of abhyanga is that muscular cramps are avoided due to it.
  • Only thing which should be done when we are feeling hungry is that,” we should eat”!
  • Any yoga or exercise should not be done when we are feeling hungry.
Morning 4.30 – 06.00 am.
Actually according to Ayurveda our appetite (Agni) changes by various factors, out of that one natural factor is the season. So time required for the digestion, also changes according to season. (eg. In varsha ritu i.e. in rainy season Agni is usually low & it takes more time for digestion). That’s why we should not consider fix time, instead of that, we should consider, the feeling of lightness & freshness as the sign of digestion of the last food.that means we can do Yoga after the digestion of the initial food. Similarly we can eat after yoga when our heart rate & respiratory rate is normal or when we are not exhausted. When we feel hungry after yoga we can have food.
Yes doing Yoga at morning is best but if it is not possible, it is advisable to do in the evening but on empty stomach i.e. after digestion of initial food.
  • व्यायामात् अर्ध सौहित्यं।
  • Ayurveda says exercise should be done only half the strength.
  • Strength differs of each individual. So here is your answer if you are not feeling to much exhausted and you are feeling fresh and enthu all the day after exercise that means you are going well otherwise you are over exerting yourself.
  • Exertion and exercise are two different things.
Shavasana or Yoga Nidra can be practiced on Bed.If there is any personalized health reason to have support of soft surface, then only as exception it should be used or for some smart purpose, it can be used to rest legs, while lying down on the floor on back.
Yes Sure, You can learn it by looking audio visual demos shown on various reputed Yoga websites. You can read books Ambika Yoga Kutir, Thane (Nikam Guruji), Yoga Vidya Dham, Nasik (Vishwas Mandlik) for better understanding. But i recommend to learn it face to face first & then you can go through these methods to further improve your skills.
